Where Optimus production actually stands
Tesla has decommissioned the Model S/X lines at Fremont and is installing its first-generation Optimus production lines; the July 2026 Q2 shareholder update anticipates production “later this year,” and states that initial builds go to an internal “Optimus Academy” for training data collection – not to customers (RoboZaps analysis of Tesla’s investor deck). On the Q1 2026 earnings call, Musk warned initial output would be “quite slow,” noting roughly 10,000 unique parts on an entirely new production line (Electrek, April 2026). The Fremont line is reportedly designed for up to 1 million units per year, though Tesla has given no 2026 unit target (RoboZaps, humanoid production economics).
What the cost analyses say
- Goldman Sachs Research put humanoid manufacturing cost at $30,000-$150,000 per unit in early 2024 – a 40% year-on-year decline (RoboZaps).
- Bank of America estimates a China-built 2025 bill of materials near $35,000, with linear actuators (27%) plus rotary actuators (24%) projected at more than half of the 2030 BOM, and dexterous hands a further 19% (RoboZaps).
- Musk’s stated target price for Optimus is below $20,000 at full production scale (Optimusk Gen 3 guide).
- China’s export restrictions on the rare-earth magnets used in Optimus actuators remain a publicly unresolved supply constraint (Optimusk).
What that implies for repair bills – our read
This section is analysis by HumanoidApplications, not a Tesla figure. If actuators and hands together approach 70% of a humanoid’s bill of materials, they will dominate repair economics the way drivetrains dominate car repair: a single failed rotary actuator or hand module is likely to be the largest single line item an Optimus owner faces, and constrained rare-earth magnet supply pushes replacement-part pricing in one direction. Until Tesla publishes a parts catalog or service terms, no one – including Tesla commentators – can quote a real repair price.
