Figure 02 vs Tesla Optimus: The Battle for the Factory Floor

The global manufacturing industry employs approximately 300 million people and faces demographic headwinds across every major economy. Two companies are competing for this opportunity: Figure AI with Figure 02, and Tesla with Optimus. They represent meaningfully different bets about how to win the humanoid robot market.

Hardware Comparison

Battery life: Figure 02 offers ~16-hour runtime — nearly twice most competitors. For a robot on an 8-hour shift, this margin matters enormously. Optimus’s estimated 8-hour runtime is adequate but tighter.

Hands: Figure 02’s 16-DoF hands with proprioceptive force sensing handle tasks requiring sub-millimeter precision. Optimus Gen 2 added tactile sensing and 11-DoF hands, but Figure’s hands have more demonstrated capability.

Payload: Figure 02 carries up to 20 kg total. Optimus payload is estimated in the 10-20 kg range.

The AI Stack

Tesla’s thesis: Dojo-scale compute applied to FSD-derived perception, plus closed-loop factory data collection, produces better robot policies faster than any competitor. Figure’s Helix system, built with OpenAI, uses a foundation model approach for cross-task generalization.

Neither AI stack handles arbitrary factory tasks autonomously. Both require task engineering, demonstration data collection, and human oversight outside a narrow envelope. The question is who reaches broader generalization first.

Deployment Reality

Figure 02 is deployed at BMW Spartanburg performing automotive manufacturing tasks — in a customer’s factory, not its own. That is a harder test. Tesla Optimus operates inside Fremont performing battery cell operations in a closed-loop data flywheel Tesla controls entirely.

Business Models

Tesla publicly targets sub-0,000 at volume. If achievable, it would make Optimus accessible to manufacturers that cannot justify premium alternatives. Figure AI uses enterprise licensing with pricing not publicly disclosed, targeting a premium customer profile.

The Verdict

Figure 02 is the more mature commercial product today: better hands, longer battery, third-party factory deployment. Tesla Optimus has the more compelling long-term trajectory: manufacturing scale, aggressive cost target, and FSD AI heritage. 2026 will determine which platform achieves first genuine scale deployment.
